AI Background Removal Is Here. I Finally Got Back to Building It.
An idea put aside during a domain dispute is finally a working tool. EZOnline's new AI background remover processes photos in your browser and exports transparent PNGs.
EZOnline's AI background remover is ready.
You can now choose an image in your browser, remove its background with AI, and download a transparent PNG. The processing happens on your device. Your original photo does not need to be uploaded to a server.
Try the background remover. There is a sample image on the page if you do not have a photo handy.
It feels good to have a new tool to write about again.
An idea I had to put aside
Before the UDRP domain dispute, I already had an idea for bringing AI tools into the browser and running them on the user's own device.
The site was already doing local video processing. Background removal was something I wanted to try next: choose a photo, process it, get a result. It had a specific use, and it was easy to explain.
At that point, though, it was still an idea in my head.
Then the dispute took up a lot of my energy. Collecting evidence, organizing historical records and supporting materials, and preparing the response all needed careful attention. Even when I stepped away from those documents, switching back into development was difficult.
So I put the tool aside.
I wrote about why ALTools became EZOnline in an earlier post. What I want to share here is what came after the move: I finally had the energy to return to something I had wanted to build.
Why start with background removal?
Because it solves a small, familiar problem.
You might have a product photo whose background needs to go before you use it in a new layout. Or you might want to cut a person out of a photo for a cover image, an avatar, or a simple design.
For a task like that, I want people to be able to get started right away. No account is required. Choose an image, process it, and download the transparent PNG.
I also wanted this AI tool to follow the local processing approach EZOnline already uses. The selected image stays on your device, the model runs in your browser, and the browser produces the result.
The first use requires a model download, so there is some waiting before processing can begin. The browser can cache the model and usually reuse it later. Moving to another device, clearing the cache, or having the browser reclaim storage may mean downloading it again.
I want that part to be clear. Opening a tool and watching it download tens or hundreds of megabytes without an explanation can look like something has gone wrong. Those files are the model used to remove the background. Your selected photo stays on your device.
What you can do with it
The tool currently supports PNG, JPEG, WebP, and HEIC / HEIF images. You can choose a file, drag it onto the page, or paste an image from your clipboard.
Once processing is complete, you can view the original and the result, or use a slider to compare them. There is a refinement option for more careful edge processing. You can download a transparent PNG, or copy the result when your browser supports it.
A fair amount of the work went into things that do not look much like new features: recovering from a failed model download, reusing cached files, letting someone cancel and start again, and choosing a suitable processing path for different browsers.
Those details do not show up in a nice before-and-after image. But they show up when you actually use the tool.
Local AI in the browser has limits, too. Download time and processing speed depend on your connection, device, and browser. Hair, fur, busy backgrounds, and transparent objects can be difficult for the model. The sample image is a useful place to start before trying your own material.
Back to building tools
Background removal is a beginning for local AI tools on EZOnline.
I want to make this tool useful and see how people get on with it. Its homepage card has a small AI badge with a gently breathing dot. A little place for the new arrival.
As WebGPU matures, I want to keep exploring what else AI can do directly in the browser, on your own device. I will keep trying different approaches and bring more practical tools to EZOnline as I find ones that work well.
My hope is that when you have a small task to get done, you can find something useful here, open the page, and get on with it with a little less hassle.
For me, it means something else as well: an idea I had put aside is finally a page people can open and use.
I am glad to be spending time building tools again.
