How local background removal works

Choose a photo, drag it onto the tool, or paste an image from your clipboard. PNG, JPEG, WebP, HEIC and HEIF still images are supported up to 60 MB.

The browser downloads a pinned BiRefNet model and processes your image on your device. The first run includes a model download; later runs can reuse cached files. Your photo is not uploaded.

Compare the original and result, then download a transparent PNG or copy the image. Fine-edge refinement is optional. On iPhone and iPad, output is limited to a 1280-pixel longest edge to reduce memory use.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Image processing happens in your browser. The browser downloads model and runtime files; those requests do not include your photo.

Why does the first use take longer?

The AI model must be downloaded and initialized. Desktop models are approximately 94–452 MiB. Stored model files can be reused, but browsers may clear cached data.

Does it work on phones?

Supported Chromium devices use WebGPU or WASM. iPhone, iPad, Safari and Firefox use a separate compatibility worker with a 1280-pixel longest-edge limit. Success depends on the browser, memory and image.

Which file do I download?

The result is a PNG with transparency. A checkerboard in the preview indicates transparency and is not included in the exported image.
